Plot of Night
First published as Un di Velt Hot Geshvign in 1956, Night is the first book in a trilogy telling of Wiesel’s transition from one of the darkest times that history has ever seen to the dawning of his new day. The narrator, Eliezer, saw the Jews of Sighet slowly approach the unthinkable step by step. First, Sighet was turned into ghettos, its Jewish citizens forced to mark themselves with stars and follow strict curfews, but nobody worried excessively over the developments.
Then, the Jews are moved to a smaller ghetto and then Auschwitz, where horrors gradually reduce his love of God and concern for others to raw, bestial survival instinct. Following some more transfers, a death march, and the heart-wrenchingly casual death of his father, Eliezer and the other prisoners are finally liberated by an American tank.
