Plot of Go Set a Watchman
Go Set a Watchman sees Scout, introduced to the reader in To Kill a Mockingbird, all grown up and grappling with the same issues she battled as a child. Race, small town hierarchy, aggression and violence are all major themes in the book. This time around, however, Scout, or Jean Louise as she is now known, is not afforded the childish luxury of black and white perception. Atticus, an old man now, can no longer manifest the ideals of Scout’s mind. She becomes disillusioned when town events bring Atticus’ closeted racist views to light.
Scout must learn that being an adult doesn’t mean being upheld as a beacon of moral fortitude and uprightness. She has to leave behind the idea that the adults in her life are only monsters or heroes; she must learn we are all human.
The reader is shocked right along with Scout in this riveting tale of intrigue, loss of innocence, disillusionment and redemption. Read it today on its own or along with To Kill A Mockingbird to get a whole new insight into the mind and writing process of Harper Lee.
